Farming

Farming

There's a rice paddy outside my window here in Kanonji, and I'm pretty much in the center of town. Few of us think much about farming especially living in the bigger cities, but farming and food is becoming a really big issue worldwide. My grandfather was born in a small country town, and used to tell me about chasing rabbits as a kid. He came to the States, and worked all his life in the factories in what was then Buffalo, a major industrialized center. But he used to spend all his free time, on weekends and holidays, taking his grandsons fishing, or collecting mushrooms in season. This yearning to be back in nature, it's still there. It's even more so in a small town like Kanonji, where the country life is just outside your window. All the more reason to see that the farming is done right, and in the best interests of everyone, don't you think? I was shocked to learn that 100 years ago there used to be over 250 kinds of fruit and vegetables on the market in India, a huge variety, and that was most certainly true of Japan as well. That's hardly the case anymore. Let's support the diversity of agriculture we still have. It's part of our human legacy.
