Red Hair

I was recently surprised to find out that my hair is a different color in Japanese than in English. In English I have red hair. When I told this to some Japanese friends they laughed because they imagine "red" hair being the same color as Santa's suit or a Coca Cola bottle. I was told that my hair color in Japanese is "brown" or "chestnut". This is still quite odd to me. Brown is a very common color for hair, whereas my hair color is only found in 2-6% of people with European ancestry. It's interesting how different cultures have different impressions of colors.
