Wayfaring Part 3

Wayfaring Part 3
“There is soup on the fire, I will get you some if you would like. Fresh bread in the kitchen as well. I make everything from scratch. I rarely go to town.” The woman's voice was soft.... gentle. She spoke as if she were trying to sooth my mind and heart. She reminded me of the mothers I saw in town who took good care of their kids. “I wonder what my mother was like....” Em said softly.
The woman passed the soup and bread around. I was grateful for her hospitality, but it was still creepy to me. “What is your name, miss?” I asked. “I’m Emma, but my friends call me Em. This here is Jamie. He is my best friend.” The woman looked at us for a moment and smiled. “My name is Rebecca. This is my son, Tai. My husband’s name was Ben. He was killed last year in the war. It’s just Tai and me here.” The woman kept her smile. “I’m sorry to hear about your loss.” said Jamie. “Yes, I’m sorry.” I said. “It’s ok. It was a long time ago. The pain from our loss is gone.”
I turned back to the fire and yawned. “Oh, you must be exhausted. I will show you to the guest room. I only have one, I apologize for the inconvenience.” Rebecca stood and walked toward the hallway. “It’s alright. We just appreciate you taking us in.” said Jamie. He had everything under control.
The cabin was small. It had the living room, a small kitchen, and two bedrooms. A single bathroom was in the hall opposite the master bedroom. “If you need to use the restroom or if you would like to shower, feel free to use this bathroom.” Rebecca’s soft voice was soothing. “Thanks. I might take a shower if that’s ok.” I looked at Jamie then at Rebecca to confirm that it was ok. “Yes, of course.” said Rebecca. Getting excited about a shower, I said, “Thank you!” and gave a huge smile to her.
We continued down the hallway to the guest bedroom. Rebecca opened the door and walked in. “The room has a queen sized bed in it and there are robes that you can use to sleep in if you wish.” She looked at Jamie. “I can give you some of my husbands old clothes to wear, and I can give you some of mine, Emma. Is a sun dress ok?” I nodded to Rebecca and smiled. She smiled back and exited the room, but returned quickly with clean clothes for the both of us. “Thank you!” we said as we took the clothes from her. “Not at all.” Rebecca said, smiling.
Just then, Tai came in rubbing his eyes. “Momma, I’m shleepy.... Can I go shleep now?” Rebecca turned and smiled. “Yes, sweetie. Come here.” Tai walked over to his mother and she picked him up. “Good night then.” She said, smiling, as she exited the room. “Good night!” we replied.
When she was gone I turned to Jamie and said, “I’m showering. Be back soon.” I grabbed one of the night robes she mentioned and headed for the shower. I walked into the restroom and closed the door, locking it.
Again, Thank you for reading! I hope you are enjoying the story. Tune in next week for Part 4 of Wayfaring.
