Wayfaring Part 1

Wayfaring Part 1

Life was normal. I had my share of enemies, but I never let them get to me. Jamie helped me with the guys who tried to really get under my skin; he was the only friend I really had back then. We lived day by day in a boring and endless routine, so a few bullies made life interesting every now and again.

We were on our way home when it happened.

The bright flash was blinding. The Earth shook violently, taking us to the ground, but stopped after a few seconds. There was no sound. Not a bird chirping nor the hum of a bug in the air. The silence was deafening. I pulled myself up off of the ground. "What on Earth was that?" I said aloud, still staring in the direction of the bright flash. Jamie got up off of the ground and stared in the same direction. "I have no idea. We should go." I nodded once, took a step back and turned. As we began to run a shrill scream filled the air around us which made me turn in shock. I looked at the people around us and tried to process what was going on. Jamie grabbed my wrist and I looked at him. His eyes were locked in the distance, he was looking at something.... something that was terrifying him. I slowly turned my head to see what he was looking at. As it came into view, terror hit me like a bat hitting a ball. My breath escaped me as the only two words I could muster escape my lips. "The sky..."

We ran as fast as we could. There were people everywhere; screaming, crying, running like we were. I grabbed Jamie’s arm and pulled to slow him down; I needed to catch my breath. “We need to go Em! Like, NOW!!” Jamie was huffing with every word. I turned to the nightmare we were running from. The giant crack in the sky was getting larger as shards of the edges fell to the Earth. Terror struck again and my adrenaline started pumping. I bolted past Jamie and grabbed his arm, yanking him with me. “RUN!” I yelled.

We ran and ran until we couldn’t feel our legs. Our surroundings changed and we were in the woods behind the town. The crack in the sky was getting bigger. We stopped at a fallen log and sat down to catch our breath. “What do you think is going on?” I asked. “I have no idea. It’s getting dark though, we need to find a place to sleep. We can’t keep running and there is no real point to it, we’re probably gonna die anyway.” he said. Jamie was growing distant, like something was wrong with him. “Jamie, you ok?” I stared at him for about 10 seconds. “JAAAAAMIIIIIIE!!!!” He blinked and looked over at me. “I asked if you were ok, but you obviously aren’t.” He ran a hand through his hair and said, softly, “Nah, I’m alright Em. Just tired I guess.” I look him over, he does seem exhausted, then again, I am too. “Ok, but you shouldn’t say stuff like, ‘We’re probably gonna die anyway’..... Punk.”

Night was falling fast and the woods weren’t safe even in the day. “Let’s go.” I said, glancing around the area. “We need to find shelter, food, water light, and perhaps weapons. Lord knows what people will do at a time like this.” I reached out my hand for him to grab and pulled him up off the filthy, moist log; I giggled when I saw the moist spot on his butt. “Yeah, you are probably right.” He said.

We made our way through the woods. The nightlife was beginning to stir, we needed to move fast.

We ran through the dense trees as quickly and quietly as possible, there was a hint of daylight left in the sky. We reached a clearing and looked around. The crack seemed to have stopped breaking to pieces, but we didn’t know if it would just stop at that. We scouted the area silently. I was on the south edge when I saw the thin pillar of smoke rising from the trees. I stared into the woods so that my eyes could grow accustomed to the darkness.

After a short while I saw it, a small cabin, small candles flickered in the darkness. “Pssst, Jamie!” I whispered loud enough so he could hear. He came stalking over. “There is a cabin.” I pointed into the woods in the direction of the cabin. “Step one: Shelter.” I said. He nodded and whispered, “Let’s move quietly. We don’t know if they have weapons and we don’t know what is out here in these woods.”

We made our way silently through the thick underbrush and trees. When we reached the small cabin I could smell the hot stew and bread, my mouth instantly started watering; I was so hungry. We made our way to the side of the house and snuck around to a window. Jamie took the lead and peered inside. He ducked down and whispered softly, “There is a woman and a kid. Maybe they will help us.” “I don’t know.... it seems too risky.” I said in a hushed voice. “I would rather try my chances with a lady and kid then a pack of hungry wolves.” He seemed confident that everything would be ok, but I had a gut feeling that everything would fall apart. “Ok.” I mumbled.

We snuck around, ducking under the windows to the front door. I looked over at Jamie to make sure he was ok doing this. “Are you sure?” I whispered. “Yes.” He replied. He stood up tall with his chest puffed out; I chuckled on this inside at how ridiculous he looked. He took one step to the door, looked back at me, and knocked.

I hope you enjoyed the read! Come back next week for Part 2 of Wayfaring!!!
