Helping children

Helping children

I notice many parents, who don't feel too strong in English themselves, try to help their children with their homework and with preparing their lessons. That usually means looking up words in Japanese, and checking on whether the children can translate the words into English. For students who've learned in class with pictures, playing, and doing things, the question of what does this particular word mean may make them confused. It's not that they don't understand, they don't know the Japanese word for something, but then again there may not be one! How do you check the translation of "a" or "the"? You don't! It's not a Japanese problem. There's nothing there. It's a different system. The time would be better spent concentrating on learning the songs, doing the exercises as exactly as possible, and not worry about what this particular word may mean. You may not be able to. There just isn't one.
