Water Puppets Hanoi

Water Puppets Hanoi

On a recent visit to the city of Hanoi in Vietnam, I went to a local theater to watch a water puppet show. Water puppetry is a Vietnamese entertainment tradition that originated in the northern area of the country. The puppets are wooden and lacquered and operated by human puppeteers behind a large screen. The puppets are supported by a large and long bamboo pole under the water and operated by the puppeteers.

The water surface acts as the stage with the puppets performing a cultural theme such as planting rice or working in the fields. There is also an orchestra in a balcony next to the water stage. The show lasts about 30 minutes and is quite entertaining. This is a must see if you are ever in Hanoi, Vietnam!
