Kukai

Kukai

Kukai was a Japanese Buddhist monk born around 774. He is known for his founding of the Shingon school of Buddhism in Japan, and also for having traveled to 88 temples in Shikoku (now known as the Ohenro or Pilgramage) to train and spend time helping others. He is said to have done this in the early 9th century. The trek to visit all 88 temples totaled about1,200 kilometers; and was done in a circular fashion around the outside of the island of Shikoku.

Kukai died in 835 and his legend started to grow, but it wasn’t until the 17th century that his trek in search of spiritual enlightenment was duly recognized and became as The Ohenro.

It is now quite popular with Buddhists and tourists alike to visit all 88 temples. Temples in Shikoku will be celebrating the 1250th year of Kukai’s birth in 2024.
