Atomic Bomb Dome

The Gembaku (Atomic Bomb) Dome in Hiroshima is an enduring symbol of the destruction that ended WWII in 1945. Just what was the building whose frame remained after the bombing? Where did it come from, and what was its purpose before the bombing?
The structure was designed and built by Czech architect Jan Letzel in 1915.
The building was used a commercial exhibition hall to promote local Hiroshima products and was called the Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition Hall.
The building stood there for around 30 years until the atomic bomb exploded just above it in August 1945. The building remains today for all to remember what happened on that day, and stands as a symbol of endurance and peace.
