Kagawa Prefecture

Kagawa Prefecture

Kagawa Prefecture is located in the northeast part of Shikoku Island in southwest Japan.
There are approximately 1 million people who live in the prefecture. Kagawa is the smallest prefecture by size in Japan. The second smallest is Okinawa. Takamatsu is the prefectural capital and largest city. The next largest city is Marugame, which is famous for its udon. Kagawa was once called Sanuki; hence, the name Sanuki udon.

There are plenty of sites to see in the prefecture, such as 23 of the 88 temples on the O-Henro or temple pilgrimage first completed by Kobo Daishi or Kukai – a Buddhist monk from the 9th century. There is also Kotohira or Kompira Temple that has over 1,300 steps to climb to the top. And the city of Takamatsu has many islands off its shore to visit such as Naoshima, famous for its art.

There is also a flag/symbol for Kagawa that it shaped like a curved, green teepee with a semi-circle on the left side that crosses partially through the teepee shape. It is a very unique design.

I have enjoyed traveling and exploring the area of Kagawa. I plan to see more in 2023!
