It is useful in teaching a language to learn at least some of the history of said language, so that the teacher may have more information at their disposable when answering questions put forth by students. English and Latin are more akin to distantly related family members than immediate family members (eg Dutch, German, Frisian, etc) but Latin has had a huge impact on English vocabulary through centuries of language contact mostly through the medium of the Early Christian Church. An area where the influence of Latin can be most easily recognized in the grammatical terminology we use and these are, for the most part, taken directly from their usage in Latin. I have been slowly making my through this really well structured and engaging textbook called Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata: Familia Romana. I really really enjoy the methodology used in the book, and I wish more modern language learning textbook series used the same one. The aforementioned methodology is as follows: the method of natural approach or contextual induction. A learner doesn't need any previous knowledge of Latin and thus begins with simple sentences like Rōma in Italiā est ("Rome is in Italy"). Things build up from there - inductively.
