Kaiten Zushi Homecoming

Yesterday, I ate kaiten zushi for the first time in three years! I hadn’t indulged in a la carte, 100 yen platters of 2 pieces of sushi each since 2019. Before the coronavirus, I studied abroad at Kansai Gaidai. Very close to my dormitory was a kaiten zushi restaurant!
As soon as I walked into Kappa Sushi, I remembered experiencing the same atmosphere 3 years ago and was hit with a wave of nostalgia. The bright colors, the slight smell of soy sauce lingering in the air, and, of course, the tiny, mock-shinkansens that speed up to your table in the restaurant and then stop abruptly to drop off your 1 dollar plate of goodness.
I used to think that kaiten zushi was a high-end sushi experience, before I actually tried it. And I laugh to myself now that I ever thought that. But, honestly, I am glad that it is on the cheap end of dining experiences, because it means I can enjoy it way more often!
