Wabi Sabi

Wabi Sabi

The Zen Buddhist concept of wabi sabi is involved in all forms of Japanese aesthetics from art, interior and exterior design, philosophy, nature, and basically everyday life.

It is centered on understanding and accepting the transience and imperfection of all things in life. Basically, the appreciation of everyday things in life that can be viewed as beautiful in its natural form. that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete in nature.

1. Nothing lasts forever (impermanent).
2. Nothing is ever really finished or complete (incomplete).
3. Nothing is really perfect (imperfect).

Wabi sabi is in its simplest sense an appreciation of flawed beauty or the understanding the wisdom in natural simplicity.
Cracked bowels, fading leaves, old age, scars, faded buildings, fallen trees, etc. These are all examples of a look into the prism of wabi sabi. All things exhibit a natural sense of beauty in some way, shape, or form no matter what the naked eye can see.

In the west we center our lives around attaining perfection, but in Japan and all throughout Buddhism they accept that life is something to be experienced and enjoyed – just as it is. Both the good and the bad, beautiful and ugly, happy and sad; these things in your life have something of value to add to your life. Just accept it and find the merit in it.

Well known martial arts personality, Bruce Lee, once said during an interview “Be water, my friend.” As water is adaptable and formless, this is a way to move through life in a manner that can help you deal with most anything in your life. Wabi sabi is a principle that can help you along with this.
