Everyone has hobbies: My D&D adventure in Japan begins
Everyone has a thing that they enjoy doing when they are not in school or at work - some examples are watching TV, reading a book, or some kind of artistic expression (painting). I have a few things that occupy a huge portion of my time outside of work, the three biggest are: learning languages, programming, and Dungeons & Dragons.
The last one on the list might confuse readers, because they may have heard of it but not know exactly what it is (it is featured on Netflix's Stranger Things) or may not have heard about it at all. So now I will provide a basic overview of what it is. Dungeons and Dragons is a table-top roleplaying game where a narrator/storyteller called the DM (Dungeon Master) with both friends and strangers can gather around in order to co-create a story (a campaign) that utilizes a set of dice to control action outcomes of both characters they create and monsters and will no doubt involve magic, elves, giants, etc.... and yes, even dragons.
As you move through the story and fight monsters, you can gain levels (like in a traditional rpg eg Final Fantasy) which make your character more powerful. Because of the nature of the game being collaborative, players get practice in group problem solving - amongst other important real life skills. One can even deal with tricky moral situations and figure out how to resolve them, because players have the freedom to make choices as they see fit basically.
I'm absolutely excited to say that I will be able to engage in my hobby again starting this month with other teachers at my job; I will be the DM and hosting the game, so I am planning on making quite a few blog posts that will serve as updates or summaries about the campaign.
"You're sitting at a table in a dimly lit tavern with music filling the air and an old man quicky runs over to you and says in a raspy voice: 'sir, sir I need your help. I need you to go save my son from the local bandit gang. Please I beg of you! I can pay you 10 gold each."
... Are you ready for an adventure?
