How to say Goodbye (part 1)

As the new term approaches, I have to prepare for the inevitable. Some of my students will no longer be my students, but today is even more difficult. When a student switches teachers at Saijo, I still get to see them sometimes, but this time some of the goodbyes are most likely forever.

I teach American School in Niihama on Saturday and this week is the last day for one of my kids. Alba has been in my class since I arrived in Saijo. She is always full of laughter, energy, and silliness. Despite being the youngest in the class, she gives it her best, and has made some great progress. I'm going to miss the joy she brings to every activity.

Next is a sudden departure, which is a bit worse, as there is no sense of closure. One of my students started cram school, so they left our school. Jocelyn is very bright, but she started a little late. It took her a while before she found her footing. Actually I almost didn't promote her last term, but I did and she handled this term easily. She was making amazing strides. Whenever I would ask 'how are you today', she would respond with conviction 'pretty good'... I don't know where she picked that up, but it always made me smile because it seemed so natural for her.

Lastly, for this part, is my Kanbai preschool kids. One goodbye is difficult, forty is nearly impossible. They are all moving on to Elementary School. Only one of them is in my regular class, so the rest of the rambunctious lot won't be a part of my life anymore. Many of them have shown a quick grasp of English, which I hope they carry into the future. I'll just have to teach Stella so well that she can keep me updated on her old classmates.
