Prime Numbers, Unicorns, Kami: Ontological Commitments
As per usual, i haven't done much of travelling or exploring (which I should really do), however it just hasn't happened, well not until golden week that is.
A recent little thought, well, a philosophical thought I've had recently is the what is there? To be honest that was posed by famed Anglo-Saxon Analytic philosopher W.V. Quine in his famous paper on ontology called "On What There Is?". He famously said that most people would say, when posed with "what is there?", they would reply with "everything", which is what i used to think as well for a very very long time.
Entities like prime numbers, mental states, unicorns, kami (hehe), and among things that we have in our Mind's eye, are in some sense not "real" things like the concrete ground or the burger i ate at freshness burger, but they exist in some form, just not in physical space, I would maybe say that they "exist" in a mental space in our minds.
This got me thinking about what exists? I honestly don't know, I mean, numbers are what make everything tick in terms of physics and reality however they are actual objects that a person can place in their hands. I'm not sure at the current and for good reason because many famed philosophers have been digging at this question for thousands of years, so it would make sense that I would not have a proper and or good answer to this question of "what is there?"
What do you think? Do you think the mental images/states of an unicorn have the state of "being" or "non-being"?
