Hard Times

Hard Times

Sometimes it's hard to reconcile the harshness of life, with the mundane routine of day to life. Living always ready for catastrophe, war, tsunami, death, disease of course makes no sense. On the other hand completely ignoring the hard times that do come, as if they weren't real, isn't real very humane. I think of the victims of the tsunami, and the Fukushima mess, and the fact that they are not at all being taken care of, I can't just forget them. They are people like us, who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It could have been us, couldn't it? Yet we must try and be happy, try to enjoy the wonderful things that are also there. I think the only solution is to acquire the capacity to not forget, without letting it become an obsession that doesn't allow you to go ahead. It's a careful balance, between keeping one's optimism, without forgetting the pitfalls that are always there. Let's enjoy, but at the same time not forget those less fortunate. That's not easy, but it's what being human is all about, don't you think?
